Online entertainment specialist owned by Sainsbury

UK retailing giant Sainsbury’s has purchased online entertainment company Global Media Vault (GMV) for GB£ 1mn (US$ 1.56mn), as part of its plans to dominate the growing online and digital entertainment market.

Global Media Vault has developed a unique entertainment e-commerce and digital media platform since it started trading in January 2009. Sainsbury’s has so far been its main client, with the supermarket giant launching its Sainsbury’s Entertainment website in November 2010, based on GMV’s platform.

GMV’s digital database now covers over 3mn music, film and game assets for the UK market, all of which can be browsed, purchased and distributed via Web, mobile, TV and kiosk applications.

“Online retailing and the delivery of digital content will play a key role in the future of entertainment so this is an important acquisition for Sainsbury’s,” said Luke Jensen, Sainsbury’s Group Development Director. “Taking full control of GMV will enable us to develop our existing Sainsbury’s Entertainment website even further enhancing the functionality and customer experience, meaning customers will soon be able to buy, rent or stream content from Sainsbury’s.”

Rival groceries retailer Tesco purchased online VOD service Blinkbox earlier this year, indicating that it wished to innovate by expanding its product range, and eventually become a multichannel retailer.

Our view: The stage is now set for the UK’s supermarket titans to battle it out for a slice of the country’s digital entertainment industry. Michael Comish of Blinkbox revealed at the IBC trade show in Amsterdam last month that he had to sell his company to Tesco due to capitalisation issues: “The capital required to make the business a success meant that it is absolutely a big boys’ game,” he said, adding that Tesco wishes to use the Blinkbox service to upsell customers on other e-commerce products and services.

Despite the financial might of the UK’s supermarkets however, they would do well to heed the difficulties encountered by Google TV: although it successfully dominates many areas of the Internet, the US tech giant has so far found the online video sector a highly challenging one to penetrate.

Brazilian’s best bar

Guanabara is a Brazilian bar and restaurant named after the main beach in Rio, serving authentic Brazilian cuisine and a wide selection of cocktails. There is a large dance floor with live bands and DJs playing.

When you first walk into Guanabara, named after the famous bay in Rio de Janeiro, you probably won’t be asked what label you’re wearing – no offence to your efforts to flash up, people just have dancing to do.

Minus special events, the dress code is non-existent, leaving clubbers to choose their style and the variance is great, ranging from simple t-shirt and jeans to fancy ties and full dresses. More relaxed outfits might fair better through than suits and stilettos as the feet keep moving and the drinks make dancing that much warmer. (more…)

Kensington’s best club

The Roof Gardens was originally built in 1938 and comprises of one and a half acres of themed gardens and a club house, one hundred feet above Kensington High Street. The first garden is an English woodland with mature trees and a lake inhabited by flamingos. The next is a Tudor garden with a fountain and the last is a Spanish garden with palm trees. They can cater for any event for up to 120 guests.

One of the most dreadful things about going clubbing is getting in. So, having previously queued outside a club for more than an hour, I was happily surprised to get in without having to wait.

The club itself is only open to private members and their guests and has several VIP areas. With two bars in the club, there is no need to wait to be served. The music is a mix of funky house and soul and the volume still allows conversations. (more…)
